One more thing…

This is a really valuable observation. The fact that version 2.40e clearly fixed the issue for you, and that the problem returned so quickly and obviously with firmware version 2.50, means that my fix (which was removed in firmware version 2.50) isolated the problem. It tells me more than anything else that the issue is indeed with the VS-1053 device. Whether or not the problem still exists with the VS-1063…

Thanks again for your feedback. I'm glad to hear that you've had success both with a variety of microSD cards as well as with 192kbps MP3 files.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. Unless people tell me about problems, I don't know necessarily about them.

It turns out that SparkFun is converting new builds of the MP3 Trigger V2 to use a newer version of the MP3 decoder from VLSI, the VS-1063. I developed the version 2.50 firmware to target the new boards (which will also have a new, FAT32 compatible boot loader). The trick that I used to detect the "no-start" condition with the VS-1053 no longer worked however; It false-detected the problem with the VS-1063 and caused endless resets. In my testing with new board prototypes, I convinced myself that it was not necessary with the new chip. So what you say makes perfect sense. If you''re running the new firmware on a VS-1053 and you had this problem before firmware version 2.40e, you likely will have it again.

I can create a version of the new 2.50 version of firmware that includes the "no-start" test for you, but it won't work with the new VS-1063 boards, and will only result in confusion if I publish it. Ideally, I should find a way for the firmware to figure out what chip is on the board…

I'm out of town until next week. I forget if I have your email address… so please email me directly at info<at>robertsonics<dot>com and I'll get with you directly to fix this.

Hi

Good news that you are still developing the MP3 trigger. Thanks for that.

Firmware version 2.50 works great here, 192kbps playback is excellent

from six different (brands) SDSC and SDHC memory cards.

BUT : the start-up problem is back (before the topic was called : No audio

at random start up).

So once in about fifty times there is no sound. LED behaviour is normal, solid on,  but

no sound. I get the impression that the first starting in the morning is the most likely

to go wrong. This happens with both kinds of memory card and with 192 and 160 kbps

files.

The project functioned without any problem during more than half a year, using

version 240e firmware, the start-up problem was certainly not present (but I could

only use 160 kbps files).

My question is : did anything change between 2.40e and 2.50 that can be the

cause of this annoyance ? (the same 160 kbps files and the same hardware function

with 2.40, and have this problem with 2.50)

And 192 kbps certainly sounds better than 160 kbps (listening to a 2.5 inch speaker)

Thanks in advance
